What is Diary.com?
Diary.com is a new social place to publish, share and discuss your thoughts, images, videos or web links with chosen groups of people or an individual.
For Twitter fans, diary.com is a multi-media microblog enabling you to create and manage group conversations around your diary entries.
Why would I use Diary.com?
- Diary.com is social, but more intimate than other sites, because it revolves around sharing with small groups of people you know
- You can target updates to a certain set or people or an individual
- It's an easier way of collecting and sharing stuff from around the web
- It's more conversational. The status update should be the start of the conversation not the end of it
- It's a log of all your posts so can be used like a new form of traditional diary
- You can bling it up, by customising it with hideous trinket graphics (coming soon)
- You get your own diary address, such as www.diary.com/freakydave which is public on Google and other search results. You can use your diary address, such as www.diary.com/freakydave on your blog or email signature.
How does Diary.com work?
Diary.com has one 'input' box that you can post items into. Type text, paste YouTube videos and image pictures, just right click on any image on the web and “Copy image location” or in Google image search cut and paste the image link to the right of the small thumbnail at the top after you have searched. Soon there will be other really cool things to do, but for now you can start guessing ;)
How do I create and manage groups?
Create a new group by clicking on the '+' icon at the top of the page. Call it for example, 'Close friends' and then 'invite' your friends or co-workers by clicking 'manage'. After they accept your invite they will see updates from that group 'Close friends'. How will people know if have posted something here? If they are on twitter they will get a notification such as “Freakydave is posting over on diary.com. You should check it out.” Or a weekly summary email (that's coming). Yay!
How do I watch discussions, what do those eyeball mean?
If you have posted something and want to keep up to date with the discussion just click the eyeballs logo on the top of the page. This then adds it to the 'Watch list' (this can be opened or closed and appears on the right hand side of the page), which will keep updating you of new comments. Easy.
The Discussion pages refresh faster than a Group page. Why is that?
Discussion pages refresh every few seconds and the Group pages every minute. We wanted a more 'live' feeling if you are in discussion with someone rather than having to refresh the page yourself. This feels more natural when in discussion.
Does Diary.com work on other sites?
Diary.com only notifies out onto other networks. Diary.com does not pull feeds in like say FriendFeed does. Diary.com lets people know that you are updating on Diary.com via Twitter. On your Twitter page this will look like “Freakydave is posting over on diary.com. You should check it out”. More sites will be added later such as Facebook. With its focus on small groups Diary.com is much more intimate and conversation focused.
How is Diary.com different from Facebook and Twitter?
Diary.com is about intimacy and conversation. Like a group of friends all in one place.
Facebook is the social graph and manages your relationships and means large numbers of people streaming information to you. You may find that annoying, irrelevant and a breach of privacy after too many 'friends' have been added.
Twitter does not allow targeting of updates to groups of people or allow conversation. Diary.com also has a 'live' feel on the discussion pages and on twitter you have to refresh the page.
Can I access Diary.com on my mobile?
Currently Diary.com is not optimised for mobiles but works on web enabled mobiles like the Nokia Series and Blackberry's. The first mobile version will be a simple iPhone version (what do you mean you haven't got an iPhone?)
Does Diary.com have a blog?
It's a glamorous life at Diary.com and with all the updates and news going on, we have a dedicated blog here.
Does Diary.com have an API?
We are planning an API once the site is up and running. We are not superhuman, only partially.
Where do I sign up for Diary.com?
You can get an account here. It's free.
I found a problem on the website. Where can I report it?
Bugs and problems can be reported to our feedback group here. We love feedback otherwise we just get to talk to ourselves all day.
